About Us

Wooden door with a sign for the Office of the Secretary. — Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #768
Wooden door with a sign for the Office of the Secretary.

The Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #768 has been a fixture on West High Street in Portland, Indiana for generations. Walk through the door on any given Friday night and you'll find neighbors sharing a meal, catching up over drinks, and raising money for causes that matter right here in Jay County. This isn't a stuffy private club. It's a place where a local server named Jackie knows your order and makes you feel like you've been coming here for years, because maybe you have.

The dining room is a real room, the kind that fits a birthday party without feeling cramped, and the kitchen turns out food people actually talk about. The Friday night steak and shrimp dinner draws a crowd, and regulars will tell you the tacos are flat-out the best in town. Portion debates aside, the flavor is there, and the price is honest for what Portland expects from a neighborhood institution.

Membership in the Elks means something beyond a meal card. Lodge #768 supports veterans, funds scholarships for local students, and organizes community events throughout the year. The fraternal mission of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks runs through everything this lodge does, from the handshake at the door to the check written to a local family in need.

What We Offer

Lodge #768 offers a full-service dining room open to members and their guests, with a rotating menu that leans into crowd favorites. Friday nights feature the beloved steak and shrimp dinner, but the house tacos have developed a reputation all their own. Catering to regulars and first-timers alike, the kitchen keeps things approachable and satisfying.

The dining room is available for private events, including birthday parties, anniversary dinners, and community gatherings. The space seats a comfortable group without the rental overhead of a banquet hall, making it a practical choice for Portland families who want a real venue without the fuss. A full bar complements the menu, and the atmosphere stays relaxed and welcoming throughout.

Beyond the table, Elks membership opens the door to a national network of charitable programs, local scholarship opportunities, youth athletics support, and veteran outreach initiatives. Weekly and monthly lodge events give members regular reasons to show up, get involved, and build the kind of connections that stick.

"Went thinking of ordering off the menu. But our fault we went on a Friday night. So we had the steak shrimp, potato and salad. Food tasted great. Portion sizes for the price was unbelievably small. I had asked about replacing my salad for something else because I can't eat salad. So I got French fries instead. Then they forgot my baked potato. Didn't see the sign on the door saying credit card machine was down and that is the only method of payment I had. The staff was very understandable and let me leave to go get money to pay for our meal. Even though the portion size was small I would definitely come back again for something off the menu"

Flag Day.

Long before it was a national observance, the Order set aside June 14th to honor the flag. Patriotism has always been one of our cardinal principles, and every lodge meeting still closes the same way it has for over a century.
